Congratulations goes out to Joey Cochran of Indiana as he traveled to Missouri for the 2010 Lindenwood July Open held over the weekend of July 17-18. He claimed $1,050 in prize money by winning the Giant A Singles RR and the Open Singles and made it to the semifinals of the U-2350 Singles.

This tournament sponsored by Butterfly, Lindenwood University, and the Saint Peters Table Tennis Club had 71 players representing 10 different states. Only 42 of these players (59%) were from Missouri. The two-day tournament consists of two different competitive formats. On Saturday, all the rated events are held from the Open Singles down to the Novice Singles. On Sunday, like-rated players are grouped together in large round robin groups so that each match played is usually a tough one.

Cochran didn’t win his titles without a fight though. In the Open Singles on Saturday, he would be tested by Fred Cantarelli of Lindenwood University. After winning the first two games 11-8 and 12-10, Fred charged back to tie the match at two games each by the scores of 11-7 and 11-9. The fifth, and final game, was a nail biter with Joey edging out Fred 12-10. If you thought Joey’s troubles were now behind him…think again. In the Giant Singles RR on Sunday, his key match would be against Andre Irigoyen of Lindenwood University. On Saturday, Joey had lost to Andre in the U-2350 semifinals by the score of 11-5, 11-9, 4-11, and 11-6. This would Joey’s only loss that weekend as he went 17-1. This time Joey employed a different strategy of attacking Andre’s backhand and selectively placing balls deep into the forehand corner as Andre attempted to turn the corner and hit a forward out of his backhand corner. Cochran finally prevailed 11-4, 3-11, 11-9, 4-11, 12-10 to remain undefeated in the Giant A Singles.

The U-2350 Singles found the top seeded Andre Irigoyen dispatching Stephen Clyde of Indianapolis in three straight games. The U-2150 had St. Louis player, Kerry Xiao, upset Lindenwood’s David Cabrera without losing a game. The U-1900 was fought be Illinois-native, Ed Hogshead, and Tennessee-native, Carl Lewis Sr. While Carl took an early lead by the score of 11-6, it would be Ed that would claim the prize by winning the next three games. The U-1750 pitted two out-of-state opponents against each other. Nestor Prato from Oklahoma would outlast Rod Sneath from Indiana by the score of 11-9, 16-14, 11-7. The U-1500 was a showdown between St. Louis, Missouri and Cordova, Tennessee. Local favorite, Michael Golde, would go on to upset Christopher Hardin in three straight games. The U-1250 was a match the likes of David and Goliath as the young 14-year old, Anish Bhattacharya, took on the veteran Volodymyr Lahovskyy. Youth finally stood victorious in four games. The U-1000 Singles found two local players from the Saint Peters Table Tennis Club fighting for the title. Jack Smith defeated Galen Bird in three straight games. The Novice Singles was played as a 3-man round robin where Kevin Cui defeated Joseph Bean in three straight games.
