The host nation dominated matters at the Korean Hopes Challenge in Pohang on Tuesday July 27, 2010; they captured gold in both the Boys’ and Girls’ Singles events, with Cho Seung Min, a name with a familiar ring, winning the male title and Chi Ye Rin, the counterpart female crown.

At the final hurdle Cho Seung Min overcame compatriot Lee Jang Mok; while Choi Ye Ra accounted for Marie Migot of France.

A bronze medal for Marie Migot, a member of the ITTF World Hopes Team and it was a performance that impressed Mikael Andersson, the ITTF Executive Director – Education and Training.

Cool Cat
“She is a cool cat; Marie Migot could very well be the most promising young player in Europe at the moment”, he said. “She has been the dominant player in the age group for girls born in 1998.”

The silver medal was a fine performance but for Zita Pidl, the heroine of the day was 11 year old Neridee Nino from Valencia in Venezuela, the city that is now the home of an annual ITTF Junior Circuit tournament.

Beat Top Seed
“She caused the biggest surprise by beating the top seed, Romania’s Andreea Clapa in the quarter-finals to secure a place on the medal podium”, said a delighted and proud Zita Pidl.

Equally the mainstay of table tennis in Venezuela was delighted, Francisco Seijas on duty at the other side of the world in Panama at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Fighting Spirit
“Yes, a bronze medal that’s really good”, he smiled. “We have a young group of players in that age group with whom we are working; Neridee is the best in that group.”

Fourth place was eventually the lot of the Venezuelan; it was a splendid performance from the South American. “She showed excellent fighting attitude”, continued Zita Pidl. “Also she displayed very good service skills and excellent control.”

Hung Ka Tak
Two outstanding performances from the girls in the ITTF World Hopes Team and there was one effort of great note from a member of the Boys’ Team; Hong Kong’s Hung Ka Tak clinched third place.

“He is the most skilful player in the ITTF Hopes Boys’ Team”, said Mikael Andersson. “Victor is fast, on his marks and builds his game around a lethal forehand; here in Pohang Here he played in the semi-final against another future superstar, the left handed Cho Seung Min, remember that name!”

Not Easy to Forget
Remember the name, I’m sure we will.
