A Canadian Junior Boys team composed of players from Quebec made their way to Guatemala City to compete in the Guatemala Open, a World Junior Circuit Event.

Seeded third in the competition, the Canadians had a smooth ride through preliminary group play defeating Ecuador 3-1, Colombia B and Guatemala D each 3-0.

In the quarterfinals, the Canadians disposed of Guatemala A 3-1 and in the semi-finals Canada stared down Argentina also by a score of 3-1. The backbone of the Canadian team was 16-year old Pierre-Luc Thériault of St-Fabien, QC, who did not lose a match, leading the team to the finals.

In the finals, Brazil was too strong for the Canadian squad. Only Thériault was able to compete with the Brazilians. In the match opener, he won against Brazil’s Paulo Rocha 3-0 (11-9, 12-10, 11-8). Danilo Toma evened the match against Maxime Surprenant winning 3-1 (4-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-6). The doubles match went 3-0 to Brazil, before Thériault tried to even the score again. But it was not to be. Danilo Toma bested the Canadian by a score of 3-2 (5-11, 11-6, 11-7,8-11, 11-7).

The Canadian Cadet team made up of Guillaume Hardy of Montreal and Mathieu Thériault of St-Fabien, QC advanced to the Quarterfinals of the competition where Paraguay proved too strong eliminating the Canadians 3-1. Guillaume Hardy won the point for Canada against Alejandro Toranzos.
