Results of the 2008 Lindenwood June Open

Saint Charles, MO - Lindenwood University has announced the beginning of its collegiate scholarship table tennis program. Randy and Kelly Kendle will direct the program that will begin competing in the Fall of 2008.

The first USATT-sanctioned tournament was held on Lindenwood's campus on June 28-29. This tournament drew 86 players from eight different states. Prize money totaled $2,150. The Saint Peters Table Tennis Club (SPTTC) would like to thank Lindenwood University for the use of their spacious gym and Butterfly for donating the white tournament balls.

Venue

Newgy Coach Shigang Yang dominated the competition by winning both the Open Singles and the Giant A Singles RR events without losing a match. Yang's closest match of the tournament was with USA National Junior Team member, Justen Yao. Justen managed to take the second game from Shigang, but lost the finals of the Open Singles in four games.

The U2200 event was won by Parviz Mojaverian, but not without a struggle. Slawomir Waclawik of Tennessee was leading 2-1 in games before Parviz closed out the match 11-8, 11-8. The U2000 was won by local player, Sreekanth Peyyeti, 11-6 in the fifth over Kansas State University's Zach Moore. Xiaofeng Guo outlasted incoming Lindenwood freshman, Jeffrey Schulte, in three tight games to lay claim to the U1800 title. In a battle of traveling players, Michael Chen from Illinois defeated Chris Malis from Tennessee in three straight games to win the U1600. Chris Malis retained his own championship by eclipsing Emily Zhao in the U1400. The U1200 title went to Matt Kern. He beat Arun Thirugnanasambandam deuce in the fifth. The U1000 event was won by up-and-coming star, Jon Stulce. Jon beat Charles De Mariano 6, 7, and 8. The novice division was won by IBMer, Joseph Chetupuzha, over Steven Gibson by the narrowest of points 11-9 in the fifth.

Sunday's competition was four giant round robins of 9 players each. Arjun Shankaren, the number two seed in the "A" division gave Shigang Yang, the #1 seed, a run for his money but finally succumb. Jeffrey Schulte, seeded in the middle of the "B" division held on to post a 7-1 record to win his second award of the weekend over Newgy's Roger Dickson. Lindenwood transfer student, Ryan Driskill, boasted top honors in the "C" division by holding off Newgy's Chris Malis. The Giant "D" division was won by Mukwa Ogitchida over Arun Thirugnanasambandam.
